Description
The novel “Charlatan” by the renowned Jewish writer and Nobel Prize winner Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904–1991) was first published in the newspaper Forward in 1967–1968 and was later published in English and Yiddish. Its protagonists are Jews living in America in the early 1940s. All of them fled Nazism and, by the time the action begins, have more or less settled in their new home. Each of their lives unfolds on three levels: on the one hand, they yearn to settle comfortably and enjoy every possible pleasure. On the other, they constantly think about their family and friends who remained in Poland and, most likely, have already perished or are doomed. And on the third, they never forget their Jewish origins and attempt to engage in dialogue with God, justifying or explaining to Him their every action, which is far removed from notions of religious morality and simple decency.
