Description

The arrest and subsequent release from prison for “counter revolutionary activity” of the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson in 5687 (1927).

The Rebbe staunchly endured deprivation and torture, physical and mental, in an event meant to destroy the Jewish Underground, and emerged from his ordeal miraculously alive and undaunted, his defiant stance entirely intact. He was able to continue leading the Jewish resistance, leadership continued by his son-in-law and successor, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, and to lay the foundation, ultimately, of the current Jewish revival.

Reviews

“A riveting account… The translation of the Rebbe`s diaries and letters vividly portrays the brutality and the repressive tactics of the Russian secret police, even as it captures the Rebbe`s sustained and heroic defiance of tyranny. The book`s inspired message is presented forcefully and eloquent…”

-Sid Z. Leiman
Professor of Jewish History and Literature
Brooklyn College and Yeshiva University

“I have rarely read a more inspiring account than this… This is one of the landmarks of religious heroism in the modern world, a story of dignity of faith under the most savage circumstances, unique testimony to the power of the jewish spirit in the life of one of its most outstanding leaders”

-Rabbi Jonathan Sacks
Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew
Congregations of the Commonwealth

“Beautifully written and stimulating book about a great man whose passion was to maintain alive what is noble and creative in our people`s survival: were it not for the Rebbe`s heroic struggle, Jewish life in Diaspora would have been much poorer.”

-Elie Weisel
Professor in the Humanities
Boston University

“…Your book brings a new vitality and excitement to this tale of courage and faith. It should be read and appreciated by all who cherish the majesty of human freedom…”

-Daniel P. Moynihan
United States Senator (NY)

Edited and translated from the memoirs of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn (the foremost Jewish religious leader of Stalinist Russia circa 1927), The Heroic Struggle is the true and riveting story of Rabbi Schneersohn`s arrest and brutal mistreatment for his conspiring with other members of the Jewish community to create an underground network that would allow Judaism to survive despite Communist persecution of religion, religious beliefs, religious ceremonies, and religious symbols. A harrowing testimony of an enduring human spirit, and culminating in Schneersohn`s miraculous release after his death sentence was commuted to exile, The Heroic Struggle is a superb contribution to 20th Century Jewish History reading lists and reference collections as being a profoundly inspirational testimony about the power of fighting for one`s roots and beliefs.
