The hero of the novel survived the Holocaust and managed to achieve prosperity. But he begins to feel disgusted with the temptations and lies of the life around him, his soul becomes an arena of struggle between G-d and the devil. What is the point of following religious precepts? Is G‑d fair in allowing His people to suffer unimaginably? Are simple human desires and weaknesses so disgusting? In the end, the hero finds the answer to these questions, but does the author agree with his harsh, uncompromising decision?
Joseph Shapiro, who tells the author about his life in the novel, was born into a religious family, fled from Poland – from Hitler, from the Soviet Union – from Stalin. His beloved, a Marxist, promised to hang Joseph after the victory of the world revolution. However, this did not stop them from getting married, leaving for America and getting rich there. And everything would be fine – if Joseph Shapiro saw at least some meaning in this life. He sees one way out of the situation: to become a religious Jew, but he sees no point in this either. He believes in G‑d, but does not believe that He gave the Torah. And most importantly: Joseph does not understand how one can believe in G‑d after He allowed such suffering to exist in the world.
